Paz! The Power of Peace: Photographs from the Goodlands

The Goodlands Photography Project is part of the community strategy by Centro Nueva Creacion to counter the negative impact of the naming of West Kensington and Fairhill as “The Badlands”. Young artists ages 8-14 receive instruction in photography by a professional photographer, and then are “let loose” to document their world through their artistic lenses. As a result, they have been able to not only see their community in a new way, but also be a part of making it a reality. Since 2001, the photographs by youth artists have been exhibited in over 15 locations, including galleries in Center City and Chestnut Hill, universities, churches and schools.
”The young people really respond to the medium of photography, with excitement and purpose,” says Brady Sanders, this year’s photography teacher. “Each image emerges infused with personality, conveying a range of sentiment from, humorous to introspective. The students are natural storytellers, sharing their experience with us, the viewer.”
