NEW MEMBERS EXHIBITION

NEXUS is pleased to present the work of new members Janell Olah, Damon Reaves, Kathryn TeBordo and Anastasia m.w. This new batch of artists, practioners from across the creative spectrum, expands the boundaries of experiemntal art and challenges easy categorizations with work in installation, animation, performance, dance and dialog.

November 12—December 4, 2009
Opening Reception Thursday November 12, 6—9 pm

Janell Olah's work explores place and circumstance through inherent and created systems. On a comprehensive scale, these are the systems that provide structure or guide movements such as airflow, plumbing, or electricity; while on a personal scale, they aid in the organization of one’s belongings or thought patterns.

Her hand-made systems are composed of module units that can be interchanged depending on the needs of the piece, or in response to the given restrictions or intended function of the site.

Project headings, which serve as titles, will often times accompany the piece through a number of variations. These titles describe the pieces physically, while at the same time alluding to the personal navigation of one’s own life.

Damon Reaves is a multidisciplinary artist exploring issues of identity and social interaction. His work converts the abstract concept of identity into a physical form (most often liquid) that is applied, worn, and dripped off. Drawing on a background in theatre, his pieces explore that ways in which we “perform” who we are.

Kathryn TeBordo, Artistic Director of Workshop for Potential Movement
My work challenges the potential of dance. Current short works approach the dancing body, the subtle body, and the thinking body as both subjects and objects; and consider some of the pivotal questions uniting dance and the visual arts, including ways of seeing and being seen. Rather than making artifacts of these works for ongoing display, I choose to present my work in a periodic performance and discussion series at NEXUS in hopes of sharing a larger conversation about dance and performance art with Philadelphia's experimental art community and others who are curious about how dance can contribute to contemporary philosophy and creative practices across all disciplines.

Anastasia m w's works explore different moments in life; focusing on individual vs. common, partiality vs. unity.
