Libbie Soffer constructs her abstract paintings using layers of transparent acrylic veils over collage on canvas. She then subjects the layers to extreme physical stress resulting in strata of many textures. The fissures and scars of the evolving surface allude to her fiber and clay installations. She refers to them as low relief sculptures.
The collage layer, text in nature, is excerpted from Soffer’s original writings and her vast collection of scrawled notes found on the street. Although subsequent layers of paint obliterate the text, she considers the collage to be the skeleton of the painting.
The work conveys the presence of “hand” in its creation more so than formal techniques of brush meeting canvas.
